The Plymouth Marjon Patriots Women continued their unbeaten start to the league campaign with a dominant win in their home debut.

A solid defensive display in the opening quarter set the tone for the game and with the Patriots on fire from behind the arc with Jodie Abbott and Emily Sycamore, it was a convincing 19-8 lead at the end of the first.

Oaklands responded in the second quarter by upping their defensive pressure but they still couldn’t quite stop the Patriots offence. Captain Annette Cook made the most of her time at the free throw line and Emily Chipperfield also got in on the scoring action. The home side went into the locker room with a 12 point lead at halftime.

The Patriots came out with a renewed focus in the second half and held the visitors to just 6 points in the third quarter. With Abbott, Cook and Alicia Parsons dominating the scoring in the period, it was a comfortable 29 point lead heading into the final quarter.

Oaklands once again turned up the heat on defence but it wasn’t enough for the guests to close the gap and the Patriots held on to win 68-38. Jodie Abbott hit 4 three-pointers on her way to being leading scorer with 18 points and Cook added another 14 points. Nine different Patriots players managed to get themselves on the scoresheet, showcasing an excellent team performance.

Team captain Annette Cook said: “We went into the game knowing Oaklands would be very well drilled. We wanted to come out the blocks quickly and put some decent points on the board in the first quarter. Then it was about remaining consistent and composed when Oaklands upped the pressure to stay in the game.

It’s a huge first win on our home court and we couldn’t be happier that we’re now two from two in the league.”
